Due to continued business growth, we are seeking to recruit a mechanical, process/ chemical or electrical engineer to support the delivery of technical due diligence assignments across the energy infrastructure space. You will be working on a wide variety of global assignments supporting investments in the natural resources and energy transition sectors (such as transitional/ renewable fuels, hydrogen, CCUS, repurposing of existing assets to transition to a low carbon economy).

Our Due Diligence consultants can also expect to work across the wider Arup Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team, delivering projects across the power generation, bioenergy, and utilities sectors. This role would fit into an established and award-winning technical and commercial advisory services team of around 100 people based in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, working on a range of UK and international assignments. Our work spans across technical, commercial and regulatory due diligence to support energy M&A activity alongside financing of greenfield development projects.

The Role

The role will include research, analysis, modelling and the development of high-quality reports to support clients’ investment decisions across the energy infrastructure space. The candidate will:

  • Advise on the technical, commercial and operational issues of energy assets;

  • Assist in the review of technical reports, specifications and drawings to understand key technical and commercial risks, and collaborating closely with specialists to understand issues;

  • Prepare and handle bid documents or discrete sections of larger proposals;

  • Meet with clients to discuss new opportunities;

  • Prepare high quality due diligence reports;

  • Provide inputs to market analysis;

  • Data and data analytics;

  • Undertake benchmark assessments of capex, opex and revenue drivers;

  • Report to lenders and investors, and contribute to construction and operations monitoring of projects;

  • Project manage due diligence assignments;

  • To a lesser extent, help write technical specifications, evaluate tenders, negotiate and write contracts – in particular review and opine on EPC and operations & maintenance (O&M) contracts.


  • This is a client-facing role that requires someone with the confidence and interpersonal skills to represent Arup at meetings with senior members of the client teams;

  • Degree qualified (engineering degree preferred) or relevant technical/ proven experience and qualifications;

  • Minimum of two years of experience of working in a professional firm within the energy sector – preferably in a specialist technology area of the business (power generation, utilities, hydrogen/biogas generation, gas network operations etc);

  • Prior experience of assisting in the delivery of business advisory type assignments;

  • A good technical understanding of a range of equipment and processes used across the energy space, and the key issues affecting each technology;

  • A strong interest in infrastructure assets and how such assets are managed;

  • Passion to develop technical and commercial knowledge outside of core energy sectors by working on projects in the energy transition, renewables and utilities sectors, would be advantageous;

  • Commercially and financially aware and strong business interest;

  • Ability to deliver projects on time and be delivery focused;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including ability to interpret and convey sophisticated technical issues in simple form);

  • Excel financial modelling skills an advantage;

  • Strong planning and interpersonal skills etc.;

  • Willingness to attend industry events and network;

  • Willingness to travel (short term business travel, mainly Europe and sometimes wider global);

  • Excellent English skills are essential (written and spoken). Additional European language skills would be advantageous.
