Data DevOps Manager- (Part-Time, Job-Share and Full-Time)

Location: Whiteley, Fareham, UK

The opportunity:

As an insurance company, Zurich understands that data is the biggest asset we have – and is critical to driving improved operational performance and feeding the strategic analytics insight we develop. Our previous CEO is widely quoted as saying ‘data is the new oil’ - and we have a Texas-sized data oil well just waiting to be tapped.

At its core, our Data DevOps function seeks to build better quality data solutions faster. With a background in data engineering, you’ll be in a key position to blend technology, process and people into a solid continuous development stream that operates smoothly and to a high standard of delivery.

As someone with previous knowledge of DevOps and a solid understanding of data warehousing and analytics, you’ll be working to transform our existing pipelines into a fully automated environment and manage the integration of our existing Data Engineering and Data Platform teams into a single coherent unit. Taking accountability for the delivery of a large portfolio of work you will work closely with our Lead Data Architect to ensure a solid, sustainable work pipeline is embedded into the team – and ensure we’re doing the right things at the right time. You’ll be seen as a trusted technical advisor both to your direct reports and to the wider management team, and as such will blend excellent leadership skills with a solid data background and technical ability.

Reporting to the Head of Data, you’ll join our Data, Architecture and Analytics team (DAA) - an industry award-winning team responsible for our UK data needs – we’re connected to almost every part of our business. If you’re truly passionate about data, can think strategically whilst balancing a good level of pragmatism - and are prepared to challenge how things get done - then you could be a key part of our team.

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you may need.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Management of a blended team consisting of internal Data Engineers and Platform Specialists as well as externally augmented resources (20+ team members).
  • Accountability for the continued transformation and continuous improvement of the current infrastructure and processes to reach our intended goal.
  • Ownership of the end to end development lifecycle, ongoing maintenance and production support.
  • Take ownership for the implementation of effective, robust data solutions; optimise existing data bottlenecks and model best practise for data across the organisation.
  • Manage the development of internal engineering productivity tools and be responsible for the development and operation of continuous integration and deployment pipeline.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance and direction as well as facilitating training and development sessions.
  • Help drive through our cloud migration strategy.
  • Spend optimisation across cloud providers and data centres.
  • What we’re looking for:

  • Previous leadership experience. You have a passion for building a strong team that has a meaningful impact on the company.
  • Proactive approach and a positive “can-do” attitude.
  • Calm under pressure, ability to navigate through high-pressure timelines, high priority last minute requests and other potentially high-stress situations.
  • An analytical mindset likes learning and learns quickly.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Comfortable taking accountability and driving things through to a conclusion.
  • Your skills and experience:

  • You’ll have experience of leading a team of technical staff, including both days to day decision making as well as performance management and career development of direct reports.

Understanding of Relational Databases & Data Warehouse methodology such as Kimball, Inmon & Data Vault. Demonstrable practical experience in developing data solutions - experienced in ETL/ELT and integrating data into Data Warehouse solutions.
  • Experience working in a DevOps environment including Agile, Scrum or Kanban project management methodology.
  • We’d like the perfect candidate to ideally have experience working in the insurance industry – though if not, a background in financial services or other regulated industries would be a plus.

  • Previous experience working in an environment that has supported production, as well as an understanding of server administration and
