Defence Business Services - Automation Garage Test Manager (C2)

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week, but has the opportunity to be flexible, job share or to be part time. 

Job description

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the use of software to create repeatable automated processes across multiple computer systems using rule-based decisions. RPA typically aids a human in running a process, or removes the human from the process altogether, freeing them up to do more value-add work. Microsoft PowerApps, at its core, allows developers and nontechnical users to build applications from selectable templates, as well as allowing connections to external data sources or store data directly inside the app. 

As the RPA and PowerApps Test Manager in the Defence Business Services (DBS) Automation Garage you will be responsible for owning the test strategy, implementing it, and ensuring deliveries meet the standards expected.


• Maintain the test strategy for the Automation Garage; 

• Identify and implement process improvements, and contribute to Garage testing standards and definition of best practice; 

• Lead on overall planning, design, management, execution and reporting on all testing whilst using the appropriate testing tools and methods; 

• Responsible for test optimisation and improvements; 

• Work with the Process Owners to define test conditions, design test cases and create test scripts and supporting data for given requirements and specifications; 

• Liaise with testing across DBS to ensure best practices are shared and offerings are optimised; 

• Responsible for the testing resources within the Automation Garage, ensuring that talent is grown, succession plans are clear, and the supply of testing resources meet the demand; 

• Responsible for test decisions relating to the deliveries of the Automation Garage. 

• You can design and execute test cases using standard testing techniques. 

• Responsible for the execution of test scripts to completion; 

• Ensure security policies and procedures are in place during testing of applications and systems to ensure that the necessary controls are incorporated. 

• Be an advocate of Microsoft PowerApps and PowerPlatform and the Automation Garage; 

• Management of Tester, assigning work and monitoring their progress. 

Essential Skills/Experience: 

• Experience of analysing data – being able to critically evaluate and communicate findings to a broader audience; 

• Experience in leading investigations into problems, and seeing them through to resolution; 

• Experience using range of different tools and approaches, and an ability to apply the right tool and approach to the task in hand; 

• Understanding of both functional and non-functional testing arenas; 

• Proven communication skills – being able to communicate the progress and issues to the wider team and stakeholders; 

• Relationship management – proven experience in managing relationships; 

• Highly motivated and resilient. 

Desirable Skills/Experience: 

• Experience or understanding of deliveries using RPA tools; 

• Experience or understanding of using JIRA and Agile methodologies; 

• Experience or understanding of working across multiple Agile teams; 

• Experience or understanding of delivering with DevOps teams.
