We’re looking for an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager to join our business and advance our Respect and Inclusion agenda. This is a newly created role and reinforces our commitment to a diverse and inclusive workforce and creating an environment that respects all individuals and their contributions.

A little bit about our business - we’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

As the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, reporting to the People Director, you will play a key role in helping us build an inclusive, healthy organisation centred around people. The main purpose of the role is to support the development and implementation of the People plan with a focus on activity that internally embeds and externally promotes Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Respect as well as employee experience.

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with the People team to retain, develop, recruit and attract diverse, high-performing talent.

  • Collaborating across teams to build awareness of and engagement with our identity, behaviours and people strategy. 

  • Working with the D&I groups, employee networks and our People and Communications teams to communicate the importance of our respect and inclusion agenda.

  • Create a consistent training offering throughout the business to promote best practice and ensure we develop and maintain a diverse and inclusive culture.

  • Supporting our response to Your View surveys to drive employee engagement.

  • Taking a data-driven approach to measure and report on the current diversity of our workforce, deliver key insights to the business and recommend areas for development.

  • Supporting and enabling our employee network groups to drive inclusion across the business and improve employee experience.

  • Partnering with our early careers team to bring an E, D&I influence to resourcing our apprentices and graduates and creating a positive societal impact.

  • Attending and organising events to maximise awareness of inclusion internally and externally.

  • Offering a balance of support and challenge to achieve engagement priorities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

You’ll have:

  • A passion for creating a great people experience, embedding diversity & inclusion both in the workplace and in our wider society, and a desire to make a significant contribution/impact.

  • Experience of effectively partnering with internal stakeholders such as HR, recruitment, legal, communications teams

  • Excellent people and communication skills, with the ability to relate to, engage and influence various stakeholders without authority

  • A track record of successfully implementing new projects and strategies, from conception through to design and implementation

  • Adaptability and the ability to launch projects and initiatives from scratch – alone or as part of a team.

  • Creative, forward-thinking approach, able to innovate and problem solve, removing obstacles when needed and use data to make decisions

  • Brilliant planning and organisation skills, and the ability to manage different projects and priorities and meet strict deadlines

  • A thorough understanding of employee engagement and internal communications principles

  • Group facilitation skills

  • The ability to explain detailed and/or complicated information in simple, everyday language

  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to provide support & challenge employees at all levels of the organisation

  • Commercial awareness with a good understanding of the business environment including customers, competitors, etc.

  • Ability to use analytical and experimental data to make good decisions.

  • Experience of project management and prioritising deliverables to independently manage concurrent and multiple business change projects and day to day operations simultaneously.

  • Resilience for when the going gets tough and a pragmatic approach to achieving an outcome – using your skills, knowledge and experience to best fit the context we are in and where we are going to (not hung up on best practice/theories that aren’t relevant to our environment)

What else do you need to know?

  • The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.

You will be predominantly based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth due to your stakeholders being there. We are flexible on location so if you don’t live nearby, let us know and we can talk about how that could work.

Devonport as a base comprises 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.
