Finance Director – Executive Search

Our client’s business

Our client is a top-tier global executive search firm specialising in C-Suite and Director-level appointments.  Based in London it is privately owned, profitable and has turnover of approximately £12 million. The business has ambitious plans for further growth and sees upgrading its finance leadership as critical to achieving this.

This is a unique opportunity to become part of the leadership team in a dynamic and high-growth business, to help drive the next stage of growth and prepare the business for a trade sale in 3-5 years’ time.  

The team

The business has operated until now with a small part-time finance team who handle all billings, produce management accounts and manage the relationship with the firm’s auditors.

Our client is flexible on time commitment and believe this role could be performed effectively on a part-time (2-3 days per week) basis.

The Role:

Lead the development of the financial strategy and work with the Board to create, refine and implement strategic plans designed to achieve business growth in profitability and shareholder value

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide finance and accounting leadership to enhance the effectiveness of key business processes and the efficiency of support functions.

  • Develop and maintain a robust financial control environment to support current business activities and future growth.

  • Play key role in leading projects to enhance the efficiency and profitability of the business.

  • Develop meaningful and insightful management information and KPIs to give true visibility of performance to the Board and enabling operational management to manage the business as effectively as possible.

  • Lead the development and implementation of a five year’ plan for the business.

  • Lead annual budget, quarterly forecasts and monthly management accounts process.

  • Provide rigorous appraisal of all capital investment decisions.

  • Lead finance, risk and IS strategy development and through pro-active leadership ensure plans are delivered.

  • Provide pro-active support to the Chairman / CEO and the Board on all finance matters.

  • Lead/ manage small finance team.

  • Manage relationship with auditors and advisers, ensuring compliance with all reporting requirements.

  • Optimise the tax position of the company and its shareholders.

  • Ensure an optimal shareholding structure to support the future development of the business

What they are looking for:

  • Qualified accountant ideally with ACA qualification.

  • Financial management experience in executive search or in another professional services/ similar environment.

  • Full range of finance competencies needed to lead finance function and thrive in a small, dynamic consulting business.

  • Will have operated closely with and provided pro-active finance support to a board / divisional board.

  • Track record of devising and implementing strategy to drive improvement in performance and profitability.

  • Some previous M&A and/or corporate finance experience or record of preparing a business for a trade sale would be advantageous.

  • Charismatic and authoritative.  Able to influence leaders and practitioners in the business to carry momentum behind key decisions.

  • Willingness to be hands on as necessary in managing a small finance team.

  • The ability to assume leadership responsibility for other functional areas over time potentially including IT, facilities and other back-office functions.

Time required:

Flexible.  Estimated 2-3 days per week.
