About the role

LV= has a great opportunity for a dynamic and experienced Head of Home, Pet & Travel Underwriting. Based in our Bournemouth or Croydon office, you will lead a Direct Underwriting team managing a portfolio of products, including Home, Landlord, Renters, Pet and Travel. You will have a strong understanding of the Home market (any experience in Travel is an advantage), underwriting and P&L dynamics. A commercially orientated individual with a proven track record of successfully developing a range of products, enhancing underwriting controls, and managing a team to drive profitable portfolio growth.

About you

You have significant Home underwriting experience (experience of Travel is an advantage) and product development experience within a Direct multi-channel environment, including aggregators and partners, with an in-depth understanding of the GI market and regulatory regime.

You are curious and passionate about the customer – intent on delivering the best value propositions which meet customer needs and expectations. Commercially focused and confident operating in a digitally orientated environment, you have exceptional communication and analytical skills, with the ability to make complex issues appear simple. You are readily able to identify threats and opportunities, form judgements, make recommendations and drive change.

You enjoy being part of busy team and managing multiple priorities. Your outstanding collaboration and influencing skills are used to build productive relationships with colleagues across different functional teams, Exec stakeholders and external organisations. You are able to take a ‘helicopter’ view of issues, making decisions and giving a steer based on the big picture.

You are an experienced people manager and leader, who motivates and delivers through others.


You will be responsible for:

  • Setting underwriting strategy that supports our strategic aims in collaboration with the Underwriting Director.

  • Ensuring that the team systematically analyses MI, researches market developments and reviews customer feedback in order to identify opportunities and make proposals to:

    • Develop products to maintain competitiveness and to meet customer expectations. 

    • Optimise the underwriting footprint across distribution channels to promote profitable growth.

    • Improve systems and/or processes to enhance risk controls and efficiency.

    • Enhance policy documents and the customer journey, ensuring accuracy, clarity and relevance. 

  • Guiding the team to develop a compelling business case for recommendations, and engaging senior stakeholders, to drive positive change.

  • Sponsoring and leading projects, and collaborating closely with colleagues at all levels across the business to ensure successful delivery.

  • Taking a leading role in management forums internally (eg Pricing Committee) and  externally (eg with the ABI).

  • Ensuring that our products and underwriting adhere to regulatory requirements, including relating to product value and how we treat customers.

  • Ensuring that the Underwriting team has a robust framework for managing the approval of changes to products, policy documents and customer communications.

  • To act as arbitrator for complex technical issues for the GI Direct business, including responding to enquiries from the Press Office or GI Exec.   

  • To lead, motivate and develop a team of underwriters, across multiple sites, specialising in product development and technical underwriting.

  • To collaborate closely with managers within Underwriting and other teams, such as Pricing Digital and Operations, to ensure appropriate alignment of approach and objectives.

  • To deputise for the Underwriting Director when required.
