About Mencap

We work in partnership with people with a learning disability, and all our services support people to live life as they choose. Everyone wants a purposeful job - to do something meaningful. At Mencap, we can give you that. You will have opportunities to develop as a person, colleague, leader and activist. We want to make you feel inspired to reach your potential.

Our work includes;

  • providing high-quality, flexible services that allow people to live as independently as possible in a place they choose

  • providing advice through our help lines and web sites

  • campaigning for the changes that people with a learning disability want

Strong leadership is key to the success of our services. We have developed an exciting leadership approach at Mencap that we call Our Leadership Way. We want to recruit leaders who can demonstrate they have the potential to excel within this framework. In return, we are committed to developing your potential even further.

The role:

Do you have senior PR experience and a passion for using media relations for positive change? Are you passionate about improving the lives of people with a learning disability? If you’ve led fast-paced and ambitious teams to deliver impactful results across national media, we could have just the role for you.

Mencap are recruiting for a Head of Media to work on a job share basis, part time (22.5 hrs per week) over 3 days per week, on a 13 month fixed term contract, covering maternity leave. The successful applicant will ideally be able to start the role in mid Feb/March 2021, giving us a comfortable amount of time for a complete hand over with the current post holder.

The role will be based at our Centre of Engagement, but will be homes based in the interim, until we can return to our offices safely.

We are looking for someone with considerable experience of leading a national media and PR function, ideally within a charity organisation, although this is not essential. You will be adept at managing high profile media relations campaigns as well as leading and advising on reputational and crisis communications issues at a senior level. The ideal candidate will also be a talented team leader, capable of inspiring, working collaboratively across multiple functions, developing and effectively managing a small and passionate team of media relations professionals.

As Head of Media, you will operate within our external communications department. Working alongside your job share partner, you will be developing and implementing an ambitious, creative and impactful media strategy in line with Mencap’s ‘Big Plan’, detailing how the organisation can harness the power of the media to improve the lives of people with a learning disability.

Navigating issues across healthcare, social care, education and employment, you will be creating diverse and impactful opportunities for sharing Mencap’s expert voice. Leading the media team, you will identify opportunities to generate visibility of people with learning disability in the media and work closely with senior colleagues to establish the media team as a key function for influence and brand awareness.

At Mencap, we value a diverse and inclusive workplace and we intentionally plan for the success of our colleagues in everything we do. We welcome applications from everyone, so come as you are and join us. Together we are Mencap!

As well as knowing that what we do is making a positive difference to people’s lives, you will receive fair pay and have access to a wide range of rewards and benefits as one of our employees.
