This client is a UK-based ‘dot com’ success story; a publisher and technology company running an extremely successful news aggregation and discovery platform.

The business presents curated and breaking headlines from around the world for those who want to read more widely, and think more critically. By presenting different perspectives and stories covered from a range of angles, it helps people to compare and contrast opposing viewpoints, spot differing presentations of the facts, challenge their preconceptions, make their own minds up, and stay abreast of topics they are passionate about.

Founded in 1997 to democratise and disrupt the market for news, our client has built up a solid brand and huge, loyal user base (over 10m users monthly). Their small & agile team, together with a focus on adtech and algorithms right on the cutting edge, has delivered a run of outstanding financial results and industry-leading success metrics.

The business is now in the fortunate position of having a proven product and the capital to invest in tackling some major growth and product development plans, both here in the UK and abroad, and creating even more social capital out of what has been an extremely successful platform.

About the role

Since the company’s inception, the CEO and its other directors have together formulated and executed the company’s strategic and day-to-day legal affairs with the close advice and assistance of external legal advisors.

As the directors’ roles have grown more strategic their availability to push forward legal affairs in this way has reduced. At the same time, the business is facing a number of mission-critical legal challenges that require concerted efforts to address.

For these reasons, they have taken the decision to bring in an experienced legal adviser to take responsibility for all strategic and day-to-day legal matters at the company.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in the media, technology and/or online advertising sectors and will have expertise in copyright law and contract law.

Due to the technical nature of our business, they will have exceptional technical and analytical skills.

They will be able to develop a solid grasp of the businesses unique legal position vis-a-vis publishers and our strategic imperatives vis-a-vis advertising partners, so as to be able to formulate and forge, in collaboration with the directors and the COO, legal relationships that will work for the company in the long term.

They will be confident face-to-face negotiators at senior executive level and will be happy to take an extremely robust approach to all negotiations with third parties, while remaining commercially minded at all times.

Key responsibilities include:

●Advising on compliance with EU Copyright Directive and forging new robust Publisher Partner Agreements with key publisher partners

●Advising on compliance with GDPR vis-a-vis website functionality, consent management and Privacy Policy

●Managing and developing existing contracts and forging new robust GDPR-compliant programmatic advertising contracts with key partners

●Evaluating legal implications of new commercial opportunities, such as white label offerings and negotiating contracts accordingly

●Advising, negotiating and amending (as appropriate) other contracts such as employment contracts, NDAs, investment agreements, leases etc (in conjunction with external legal specialists as required)

Their culture

●      Open: they share and collaborate within and across departments

●      Scientific: peer review and experimentation is in their DNA

●      One team, one vision: no office politics

●      An appreciative environment: expect to hear ‘thanks’ a lot

●      Room to grow: development of skills and responsibilities is encouraged and rewarded

●      Virtual: they run a partial remote team (but with periodic London meetups)

●      26 days holiday plus bank holidays

●      NEST pension scheme

●      Competitive salary + bonuses
