The Legal Department provides legal support to businesses, support functions and senior management within ABN AMRO UK and, in doing so, supports the effective management and control of legal risks taking into account the objectives of the ABN AMRO UK, relevant commercial issues and in proportion to the risks and value of ABN AMRO UK.


Your job

The legal counsel role will focus on supporting ABF UK’s “Lease” business line (ABF Lease). It will also involve supporting all of ABN AMRO’s other activities in the UK, including transactional, operational and regulatory issues. In addition to advising on existing and new products within ABF Lease, the legal advisor will assist other members of the Legal team where relevant in identifying, monitoring and mitigating legal risks that arise in ABN AMRO UK’s wider business and operations.


Guidance and legal advice:

  • Considers legal risks and commercial interests in a broad context and proposes creative solutions/approaches to meet the business needs and opportunities.

  • Steers solutions for the business by reviewing the context, facts and information given.

  • Gives verbal or written practical, independent, solution-driven legal advice in transactions and projects and assists with the implementation when required.

  • Handle incidents, claims and litigation.

  • Makes sure that the client relationships and the quality of the legal advice remain excellent in all circumstances.

  • Escalates issues to the relevant Senior Legal Counsel, Country Head Legal UK and/or business (management) as appropriate.


Training and knowledge:

  • Assists and prepares internal presentations/training to businesses and support functions on specific legal topics to increase legal risk awareness and knowledge.

Project/File/Transaction Management:

  • Deals with legal issues in a broad context, including matters that may be complex by virtue of their legal sophistication, size, profile, considerable strategic impact, risk and reputation exposure, secrecy and sensitivity, time constraints, number of internal and external stakeholders involved or their cross-border dimension.

  • Maintains contact with parties involved and seeks guidance where necessary.

Management of external lawyers:

  • Engages external lawyers/law firms for incidents, claims, litigation and specific legal questions.

  • Administers the legal panel relationships with law firms, including monitoring legal spend.

Policies, guidelines and standards:

  • Prevents legal risk for the business by drafting, reviewing and updating policies, guidelines and standards.

  • Translates laws and regulations to business requirements, policies and procedures.

Internal reporting and strategic management:

  • Keeps senior management informed by assisting in preparing dashboard updates for management teams such as the Executive Committee and Risk Committee.

  • Attends and influences risk assessment and control meetings using legal and commercial knowledge.

  • Identifies new legislation or legal topics of critical interest and prepares horizonscanning updates.

ABN AMRO UK is part of the Corporate Banking business line and operates the following businesses in the UK:

  • Corporate and Institutional Banking – which includes  Corporate Banking, Clearing Global Markets - Sales & Trading, Escrow & Settlement, and Financial Institutions

  • Commercial Banking which includes Asset Based Finance and International Desk, which provides transactional banking services

Our business lines are supported by a number of functions such as Risk, Compliance, Legal, IT, Finance (Including Tax), Business Management and Human Resources. We currently employ approx. 380 individuals in the UK.


Your profile

  • A-Levels or equivalent

  • Law degree or non-law degree with GDL Legal Practice Course

  • Post-qualification experience with a law firm

  • Experience gained in-house

  • Experience of asset finance and leasing transactions

  • Experience of general banking and finance transactions

  • Good organisational skills
