This key role in the Learning and Teaching Development Service’s Academic Practice Team, supports academic staff across all of the University’s campuses.  You will design and deliver high quality training and development initiatives for academic staff and others engaged in delivering and supporting learning and teaching, in support of the University’s commitment to teaching excellence.   As part of the wider team and Service, develops and delivers the University’s overall academic practice development agenda and aligns continuing professional development (CPD) provision to support this agenda.

A qualification at postgraduate level, and relevant professional qualification or recognition in teaching, are essential as is the ability to plan, organise, teach, monitor and evaluate high quality training and development provision.  You will have the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a wide range of colleagues, through your excellent interpersonal and team-working skills. Excellent communications and presentation skills, both oral and written are essential, as is a creative approach to problem solving.

The post is fixed term for 12 months, part time at 20% FTE.

This post is available internally as a secondment opportunity, or as an additional 0.2 for a current member of staff on a fractional contract.

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to devising and implementing the University’s provision to support staff and research students in developing their academic practice in order that University needs and those of individual staff are met

  • Contribute to strategy and policy so that appropriate staff development interventions are implemented for academic staff, and part-time and postgraduate teachers, identifying new and emerging opportunities to ensure that the University’s provision and advice is up to date and relevant, taking account of sector needs, including the role of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF)

  • Be the Academic Practice team lead managing one of the University’s three core programmes for staff delivering and supporting learning and teaching

  • (Introduction to Learning and Teaching in Higher Education;  Certificate of Advanced Studies in Academic Practice;  UKPSF Experiential Route), and working with colleagues in the Academic Practice Team to ensure effective support is in place for all programmes (including undertaking related administrative functions, e.g. marking and moderation, as required)

  • Contribute to the development, delivery and assessment of the University’s accredited programmes for staff delivering and supporting learning and teaching, and the broader academic staff development programme offered by LTDS

  • Contribute to obtaining and maintaining the validation and national accreditation of Newcastle programmes delivered as part of the academic staff development programme (including the UKPSF CPD Scheme), in order to maintain their high status

  • Contribute to the development, approval and implementation of University policies relating to the development of University staff and research students who deliver and support learning and teaching, and other University policies relating to learning and teaching as requested by the Head of the Academic Practice Team or the Head of LTDS

  • Prepare data/reports for a range of University committees e.g. University Learning Teaching and Student Experience Committee, University Research Committee and Staff Committee

  • Interact effectively with key stakeholders to co-develop and build understanding and support for development interventions across the organisation, reporting in accordance with the relevant governance arrangements

  • Work effectively with other University academic staff development providers, e.g. Organisation Development, so that the University’s academic staff development provision is comprehensive and efficiently delivered

  • Work with and to the Academic Practice Team Manager to provide Heads of Academic Units, and other senior managers, with timely and consistent sources of advice, guidance and support regarding all aspects of academic staff development (including where appropriate, local tailored academic staff development events which meet the specific needs of particular groups)

  • Work with colleagues within LTDS to ensure that the development opportunities are communicated effectively, including via the webpages, to ensure accurate and appropriate information is available at all times and that staff can access development through appropriate means

  • Commission and evaluate external facilitators to deliver academic staff development programmes to the standards of the University

The Person 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Relevant professional qualification or recognition in teaching

  • Knowledge of academic staff development theory and practice in the areas of learning & teaching

  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of strategies and plans in relation to University staff groups

  • Knowledge of national developments in learning and teaching and more widely in higher education

  • Development and implementation of on-line learning; eportfolios and learning management systems, (e.g. Blackboard) to support CPD

  • Understanding of University quality processes

  • Recognised as a Fellow or Senior Fellow by the Higher Education Academy

  • Ability to use MS Office systems effectively in terms of record keeping and data analysis

  • Written reporting for committees to support governance

  • Analytical and process improvement skills for both data and systems

  • Budget management

  • Contract pricing and negotiation

  • Designing, commissioning, delivering and evaluating training & development activities which range from short programmes through to more substantial accredited development initiatives.

  • Experience of working with the UK Professional Standards Framework

  • Experience of working with HEIs in other countries or other relevant overseas work experience
