Role overview

An exciting opportunity for an experienced litigation PSL, or an experienced Insurance lawyer looking to move away from a traditional fee earning role, to join us as a Professional Support Lawyer for our Insurance Group.

RPC acts for both insurers and their insured clients in defending claims involving professionals such as: solicitors, insurance brokers, accountants, financial professionals and pension experts, as well as surveyors and construction professionals. The team also has expertise in defending fraud and dishonesty cases as well as regulatory and disciplinary investigations.

We are creating a new central Knowledge team which will include several new roles. The roles and responsibilities of the Insurance Professional Support Lawyer will develop in line with this new team, with the successful candidate supporting the Head of Knowledge in the team's design and development.

The Insurance Professional Support Lawyer will sit within the Insurance Group and have a dotted reporting line into our Head of Knowledge.

The role is based from the Bristol office with travel required to support the Insurance team in London. We will consider applicants requiring a range of part-time hours.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Knowledge and other Professional Support Lawyers to establish a central and consistent approach to knowledge management. This will involve a commitment to firm-wide knowledge projects.

  • Work proactively with lawyer teams and Business Development (BD) to raise the profile of the Insurance Group and cement client relationships by identifying opportunities, drafting articles; legal insights and thought leadership content for external and internal consumption.

  • Work with the Learning and Development (L&D) team to draft and deliver content for client and lawyer training sessions and events.

  • Work with the wider Knowledge and Business Services teams to develop client know how products such as horizon scanning tools and toolkits.

  • Assist BD in the preparation of pitches and tenders by researching and writing content to enable the team to exploit business opportunities;

  • Liaising with L&D, manage and deliver the team's knowledge training programme, providing ongoing training and development updates to the Insurance Group and wider litigation teams as required through a variety of media.

  • Work closely with all litigation PSLs and lawyer teams to develop and maintain precedents, client guides and products relevant to both the Insurance Group and all litigators ensuring they represent best practice.

  • Working with the central Knowledge team, proactively capture and disseminate know how to demonstrate best practice

  • Undertake complex legal research to provide support on client matters and business development activities.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of appropriate legal-tech tools, establish their potential application and implement where relevant, technology to support litigation eg costs stage budgeting, and automation.

  • Work with the central KM team to develop "knowledge hubs" on the firm's intranet.

  • With support from the KM Research team, keep up to date with legal, business and industry developments and proactively disseminate the impact of any developments to our lawyers and clients.

Knowledge, skills and experience

The ideal candidate will have the following qualities:

  • An experienced PSL, used to operating at a senior level, but fee earners, with at least 6 years' experience looking to make the transition into a support role will also be considered.

  • Technically excellent in all areas of Insurance litigation, ideally with strong experience of Professional Indemnity (across professions) and Property Recovery both coverage and defence.

  • A commercial awareness and enthusiasm about business development; and the ability to digest, analyse and succinctly communicate complex issues with clarity to both internal and external clients.

  • A proactive individual who can identify opportunities and produce content to ensure the team's strong market presence.

  • The successful applicant will be able to manage demanding workloads with strict deadlines and possess strong project management skills.

  • Strong client focussed approach with excellent analytical, communication and organisational skills.
