The role:

BMJ Knowledge Centre has a permanent vacancy for a part-time editor (0.5 full-time equivalent) to join our team to work on BMJ Best Practice and BMJ Learning.

The role involves planning, commissioning, writing and editing complex medical content for a demanding audience of clinicians. You will take ownership for curating a specialist area of our content, liaising with external clinical experts to ensure it is up to date with the latest evidence and guidelines, as well as compelling and digestible for our target audience. You may also be asked to lead on the production of new content and develop new formats to meet the needs of our growing audiences.

You will need strong editorial instincts, meticulous attention to detail and a confident approach as well as proven ability to produce practice-changing, evidence-based clinical content to the highest standards and to tight deadlines.  A biomedical degree is required and clinical experience would be an advantage though is not essential. Other vital skills are the ability to critically appraise evidence developments and to extract the key take-home messages from complex medical literature.

Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for curating a specialist area of content

  • You will write and edit new and existing content within your section to ensure it is relevant, up to date, and clinically accurate

  • You will analyse and assess medical literature, evaluate (sometimes conflicting) medical opinions, to inform editorial decisions

  • You will engage with contributors to provide expert advice and knowledge

  • You will engage with users through feedback as well as usage and other data to inform editorial decisions

Qualifications

At least two, preferably all of the following:

  • First degree in a biomedical science or clinical / healthcare subject 

  • Further degree or professional qualification in a related field - Medicine / Pharmacy / Nursing / Journalism / Science Communications 

  • Extensive previous experience devising, creating and updating clinically accurate information for a reputable scientific publisher
