Job Title: Senior Ecologist

Location: Newcastle

12 Month Fixed Term Contract

We are currently looking to recruit a senior ecologist (or ecologist) to join an established team of consultants, on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

The position is ideally based in the Newcastle office (although Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast will be considered) and would ideally entail travelling across Scotland and the north of England as the need arises (depending on Covid-19 restrictions over the coming year), assisting teams in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Belfast on a regular basis.

The Team

You will work as part of a team of 6 experienced ecologists, within a wider consulting team to deliver an effective and professional service to a range of clients. Projects can vary greatly in nature and duration, which helps to provide a diverse working environment.

This is a multifaceted role, and your day-to-day responsibilities could include the following:

  • Running the ecological input of projects, including client meetings, project delivery and budgets;

  • Preparation of bids and tenders;

  • Preparation of clear and concise reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), Species Survey Reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitats Regulations Assessments/Appraisals (HRA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments;

  • Technical reviews of ecological reports

  • Providing clients and team members with technical advice on subjects including survey requirements, mitigation requirements and habitat creation;

  • A small amount of field survey work, such as Phase 1 Habitat/UKHab surveys (including condition scoring for BNG assessments) and protected species surveys (e.g. for great crested newt, bats and badger);

  • Data analysis of survey results;

  • Presentation of data using ArcGIS;

  • Possible site work as an ecological clerk of works (likely to be limited if it occurs).

Requirements and skills

We encourage our ecologists to demonstrate drive and motivation, a willingness to keep learning about the industry and a desire to optimally deliver an excellent service to our clients.

As such, we are looking for the following qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience in you:


  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in a relevant subject, such as Ecology, Zoology, Geography or Biology (or equivalent);

  • A Masters qualification in a relevant subject area, such as an MSc in Environmental Consultancy, is advantageous but not essential;

  • Membership of CIEEM, or equivalent professional body;

  • A full driving licence is crucial.

Transferable Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of having worked in the consulting industry previously;

  • Strong team-working skills;

  • A planned and organised approach to work and meeting deadlines, in a commercial environment;

  • Ability to use own initiative / be proactive;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication;

  • Consistent track record to write clear and concise reports;

  • Understanding the importance of QA procedures and confirmed ability to review ecological reports;

  • Ability to understand and respond to the needs of internal and external clients;

  • Ability to be flexible to the needs of the business, and changes to project plans

  • An interest/experience in environmental subject areas beyond ecology, and a willingness to support the wider environmental team as required;

  • Willingness to work some evenings and away from home;

  • Understanding of the importance of ensuring compliance with Health & Safety and other regulations.

Technical Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Understanding and experience of undertaking PEAs

  • Technical knowledge of requirements for protected species surveys, in particular for birds and bats;

  • Understanding of relevant legislation and planning policy;

  • Understanding of the importance of EcIA and how it relates to a project;

  • Experience of having written and reviewed EcIAs;

  • Understanding of the Habitats Regulations Assessment/Appraisal process;

  • Experience of having written and reviewed HRAs;

  • Experience of having undertaken BNG assessments;

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office;

  • Experience of having used ArcGIS software.
