Route Services is a division of Network Rail, formed to provide our routes with services and supplies that they need in order to maintain and deliver a better railway for a better Britain. We work with our customers to provide them with the safest, most cost-efficient and effective services enabling them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.

Supply Chain Operations:

This opportunity sits in Supply Chain Operations (SCO), a division of Route Services that procures safe, sustainable, products and services that are in turn used to improve and enhance the rail infrastructure across Britain. SCO aims to deliver excellent value and service to our customers, helping the rail industry to work together to deliver a more cost-effective railway.

Our extensive supply chain network plays a crucial role in helping to run a safe and efficient railway.

Every year we:

  • Buy and deliver 2,000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast.

  • Operate 1,200 rail vehicles.

Behind the scenes we:

  • Process £7,000,000,000 of payments.

  • Handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls.

Every year:

  • Mechanical and electrical locking fitters maintain 468 signal boxes and 387 ground frames.

  • Operational property helpdesk process over 200,000 calls.

Brief Description

Network Rail Overhead Condition Renewals (OCR) team is an OLE Construction team delivering renewals and new electrification projects across Network Rail Infrastructure. The team plans and delivers projects via an internal workforce and internally operated On Track Plant and Wiring Train Fleet. To meet with growing workbank demand on Anglia and NWC routes a Senior Project Manager is sought to manage teams across these locations in delivering projects to a value of £70m.

The role will provide line management and leadership to Project Management, Commercial, Programme Controls and Access Planning teams to ensure projects are planned on time, safely, and to meet with Clients expectations. The team works on a national basis therefore will require outbased and agile working on a regular basis.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Develop and deliver the project, on time, to budget and to other agreed success criteria within corporate guidelines including the Investment Competence Framework.

  2. Work with the client to establish an effective relationship supporting effective delivery, performance measurement and management of change. This should encompass where appropriate communications with outside bodies.

  3. Develop and manage the project team (including external suppliers), monitoring adequate resources available to deliver a flexible, competent, skilled and effective workforce at all times.

  4. Achieve the project outturn and margins as agreed with the Programme Management team.

  5. Develop an appropriate strategy for the development and delivery of the Project work scope.

  6. Identify priority opportunities within the Project and lead promotion and sharing of best practice within the programme organisation.

  7. Monitor planning so that it considers and manages the interdependencies between other projects and programme requirements and supports the effective delivery of contracted obligations.

  8. Act upon and discharge of, all Construction Design Management (CDM) obligations for projects as directed.

  9. Undertake accident investigation when remitted by the relevant designated competent person.

  10. Identify and implement quality and efficiency improvement initiatives.

  11. Lead and inspire the team to maintain full engagement in meeting business objectives.

Manage and comply with company procedures to provide appropriate resources, communication strategies, training, and competency and evaluate fitness of staff to safely deliver their accountabilities

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Member of a relevant professional body with chartered status and/or educated to degree level.

  • Relevant experience in the successful management of significant projects in the construction and/or rail industries.

  • Strong communication skills, commercial focus and financially astute.

  • Knowledge of the principles of investment processes and procedures.

  • Project Safety Management course.

  • Contract requirements environment awareness.

  • Detailed knowledge of Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations.

  • General knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations

Desirable

  • Knowledge of/experience in the UK rail industry.

Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
