The Role

Arup’s risk and reliability consultants provide risk analysis, reliability and safety engineering, and management on some of the most exciting projects globally.

You will join Arup as a Senior Consultant working in our Risk and Reliability team based in London/Manchester. Your role will be to lead, manage and support the wider team in providing risk management consulting in technical safety and quantitative/ qualitative risk analysis to support our clients in making risk informed decisions. You will also be responsible for the coordination and implementation of all technical safety and risk engineering activities including the development of safety cases, safety justifications, and safety management systems to demonstrate and lead risk reduction in accordance with industry standard methodology and accepted levels (as the need arises by regulatory bodies, certification and insurance audits)

Working in coordination with multi-disciplinary design teams of architects, engineers, technical domain specialists, cost consultants, and project managers to integrate our technical safety risk management and reliability & maintainability management into the holistic resilience design and operation of building, system, and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities will include understanding the client’s business, identifying the risks in a structured and consistent manner whilst working very closely with the client to mitigate and handle these risks via suitable and efficient controls. As Senior Consultants, you will be involved throughout the whole life cycle from input at strategic and planning stages, feasibility, and concept design to operation and maintenance. Your involvement may range from technical lead and delivery on multidisciplinary projects, conducting bespoke technical risk and reliability assessment to independent peer review and technical due diligence studies.

As well as an outstanding standard of technical knowledge in system engineering, reliability engineering, safety engineering, and risk assessment and management technique, you will require strong skills in written, verbal, and sketch communication, excellent organisational skills, and a grasp of the multi-disciplinary design and project delivery on small, medium and large projects. You will be collaborative in your approach but able to work independently and will gain a detailed understanding of the role of a design engineer, structural, fire and building engineering design, first-principles design and risk-based design frameworks.

The role will be predominantly focussed on the rail industry and the successful applicant will be encouraged to lead and support business development and the development of technical excellence within the team to provide technical safety and risk engineering solutions for the operation of new and existing rail assets and infrastructure. As part of a multi-industry team, you will be encouraged to be driven and is keen to adapt and transfer your skills and experience to new industries when opportunities arise.

Requirements and skills

Crucial skills and knowledge

  • Accredited Chartered Engineer or equivalent with a membership of a relevant professional body.

  • Solid understanding and experience of risk assessment (qualitative and quantitative) and risk management techniques.

  • Experience of safety evaluations techniques e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA and safety case development.

  • Excellent communication skills in conveying sophisticated technical information and ideas to non-technical individuals at all levels.

  • Ability to lead and empower others and also work collaboratively to influence at all levels.

  • You will be proactive, highly motivated, and adaptable, taking initiative and a willingness to learn and continuously improve.

  • Experience in applying analytical thinking and problem-solving with an ability to quickly understand sophisticated issues.

  • Highly experienced in chairing and hosting workshops with clients, partners, and engineers.

  • Strong interpersonal, people management, and team-working skills.

  • Experience in negotiates successful outcomes that achieve the required objectives and have the support and acceptance of all parties.

  • Experience of working in the rail industry.

  • Solid understanding of relevant EU and UK railway legislation and standards e.g. ROGS, CSMs, EN 50126/8/9.

Desirable skills and knowledge:

  • Experience in the application of the functional safety standard IEC61508 and its industry derivatives (BS EN 61511 for the process industry, ISO 26262 for automotive, ISO 14971/ IEC 60601 for Healthcare & Medical Devices), BS EN / IEC 61703, and IEC 60300;

  • Familiar with the London Underground Quantitative Risk Assessment (LU QRA) and RSSB Safety Risk Model (RSSB SRM);

  • Use of the Isograph Reliability Workbench Software Package and other FTA/ETA/reliability software tools;

  • Interest and experience in relevant areas such as Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment, reliability engineering, and asset management

  • Interest and experience in risk-based design, data analytics, numerical/statistical analysis (such as Monte Carlo Simulation), human factors and dynamics

  • Intermediate or higher ability in programming in Visual Basic, C++, Python, or other scripting languages

  • Interest and experience in digital railway, security of safety critical systems, cyber security of Industrial Control System (ICS) such as ERTMS / ETCS / GSM-R, industrial internet of things (IoTs), new digital tools, digital performance management, data visualization


  • Degree in mathematics, science, engineering or related field or equivalent experience.

  • MSc, Ph.D. or other postgraduate qualification in a relevant area (Desirable not crucial)
