Staff Manager, London, Part Time

The Company 

HCT Group is a social enterprise in the transport industry, safely providing over 30 million passenger trips on our buses every year. We deliver a range of transport services – from London red buses to social services transport, from school transport to whole transport networks. Purpose of Role 

This role is responsible for supporting the Senior Staff Manager and the other Staff Managers to deliver an efficient and reliable bus service through effective management of a team of PCV Drivers.

Role Accountabilities 

  • To manage all aspects of driver conduct (including investigations, disciplinary hearings, capability, sickness, timekeeping and attendance. 

  • To work with the Senior Staff Manager to monitor, manage and control staff sickness / absence within agreed targets. 

  • To assist the Driving Standards Manager to record and investigate all collisions and passenger injuries in compliance with company processes within agreed safety targets. 

  • To undertake probation reviews of new drivers after one, three and six months, and allocate probationary drivers with an informal ‘buddy’ to assist with queries.  Working with the HR department to undertake a staff engagement programme to increase staff retention within the business. 

  • To undertake exit interviews when PCV drivers leave the business and identify and implement actions to improve driver retention levels. 

  • To undertake annual driver performance reviews and in conjunction with Driving Standards Manager compile associated Individual Development Plans to assist drivers with reaching and/or maintaining required standards. 

  • To keep drivers records up to date and utilise the OmiDas system to effectively maintain and manage driver information 

  • To ensure all mystery shopper reports are monitored and appropriate action taken to ensure high standards are maintained. 

  • To collate and deliver statistics and reports in accordance with set timescales or as requested. 

  • To work as part of a team of Staff Managers to ensure driver and other staffing levels are maintained at the optimum level. 

  • To ensure all company procedures are complied with. 

  • To achieve compliance within the operation and auditing of the defect reporting system, ensuring all drivers are aware of their obligations, the role of VOSA and the need to report any VOSA checks immediately. 

  • To support succession planning by identifying drivers with high potential for career progression and CPD opportunities. 

  • Duties and responsibilities vary from time to time and the post holder will be expected to perform other such duties, which are reasonably comparable in accordance with the conditions appertaining to the post and to meet operational requirements. 

Company Responsibilities

  • To report to the Regional Director any injury, collision, dangerous occurrence or a near miss in which you were involved, or are aware of having taken place at your place of work, or any concern regarding any health or safety issue; 

  • If you drive or operate machinery, to tell your employer if you take medication that makes you drowsy;

  • To report any injuries, strains or illnesses you suffer as a result of doing your job; 

  • To report immediately any hazard, faulty equipment or health and safety concern and ensure action is taken to make the hazard safe.

Person Specification: 

Essential criteria:

  • Proven experience of managing or supervising others preferably within a unionised environment. 

  • Ideally be CIPD qualified or working towards level 3 qualifications 

  • Ideally be in possession of an ILM Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Management, or equivalent. 

  • Have a knowledge or prepared to learn about of all relevant legislation and to ensure compliance with Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Health and Safety Regulations and all company policies and procedures 

  • Experience of working within the bus industry (desirable but not essential). 

  • Experience with IT systems e.g. MS office Page 4 of 4  The ability to work flexibly within deadlines.

  • Ability to manage a diverse workload.  Good knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and requirements. 

  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills and the ability to be accurate and pay attention to detail 

  • Able to develop and produce reports for review by Senior Management 

  • Ability to work with Operations colleagues in a collaborative manner 

  • Be able and willing to work shifts including a 5 over 7-day week (pro rata).
