The Cultural Heritage & Archaeology team is one of the largest heritage consultancies in the UK, working as part of an integrated Environmental Services team. We work across the UK and overseas and cover all aspects of the historic environment (cultural heritage design, built environment, heritage landscapes and setting and archaeology). We provide our clients services throughout the full lifecycle of projects, giving expert advice on an ever-increasing portfolio that includes high profile and large-scale infrastructure projects. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team we pride ourselves on delivering high quality and innovative work that effectively addresses the challenges of each project.

You will be the point of contact for all queries related to Cultural Heritage & Archaeology from both internal and external clients in the Northeast of England and will play a strategic role in one or more sectors, depending on your experience. The role is integral to our heritage team’s development in the North and will require the combination of high-level technical expertise with commercial and business acumen. You will have an appetite for business development, excellent team management skills and the ability to create and maintain a positive team culture, whilst ensuring a focus on delivery and careful adherence to WSP Business Management System processes. You will be accountable for winning and delivering work to budget and programme and will be a self-starter, able to work with a high degree of autonomy whilst reporting regularly to the Regional Lead. You will be a great communicator who is able to build strong relationships within the team and with external and internal clients, and to work with other senior members of the Cultural Heritage and Archaeology team to achieve strategic development goals. We are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrable portfolio of work in the renewables and/or residential sectors and/or international cultural heritage including EIA/ESIA and heritage development master planning.

A typical week would include:

  • Leading bids for large complex and specialist projects

  • Reviewing deliverables produced by the team prior to review by the Regional Lead to ensure technical excellence is always maintained and projects are delivered on time and within budget

  • Ensuring operational compliance with WSP business systems, Health and Safety and Risk management

  • Management of team resources for project work and maintaining all relevant resource programmes on a weekly basis

  • Regular liaison with other Team Leaders and the Regional Lead

  • Contributing to the strategic development of our heritage services nationally and internationally

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A Degree in a Cultural Heritage & Archaeology or Conservation related subject

  • A managerial qualification (Desirable)

  • Membership of an appropriate professional Institute (e.g. CIfA) (Desirable)

  • Experience of leading and managing teams, including performance management and mentoring

  • Experience of technical report writing and quality assurance

  • Excellent business development skills and a proactive approach to managing change

  • Financial management and oversight of budgets

  • A proven track record of successfully tendering for large and complex heritage projects

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to act as a specialist ambassador for our services

  • Robust knowledge of the historic environment in the UK

  • Full knowledge of the planning process and relevant environmental/heritage legislation and guidance

  • Full Drivers' Licence

  • Experience using ArcGIS (Desirable)

  • Experience of tendering for and working on international heritage projects (Desirable)

  • A demonstrable track record in winning and delivering projects within your specialist area (Desirable)

You will be based in Leeds or Manchester and will be active in promoting and diversifying the team service offering and in winning new work from internal and external clients.
