Technical Underwriter: Personal Lines – (P/T, job-share or F/T)

Location: Fareham

The opportunity:

Do you have a background in Insurance? Are you looking to start your Underwriting career or want to take that next step? As a result of internal progression and team growth, we have two permanent opportunities to join our team in Fareham.

In our personal lines technical referral team, no two days are the same. As the Technical Underwriter, you will provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to our third-party administrators and intermediaries. You’ll be able to get stuck into a range of referrals, including investigating complex cases and ‘non-disclosure’, understanding the risks and facts associated before making a decision.

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and make decisions on technical underwriting referrals from all areas

  • Investigate underwriting concerns arising from a claim - often non-disclosure - and make voidance decisions in accordance with agreed authorities and service standards.

  • Provide clear explanations for underwriting decisions, sharing relevant technical information to build and maintain relationships with third party administrators and intermediaries.

  • Resolve operational day-to-day problems referred from other functions of the business, ensuring an efficient and high-quality service is extended to all third-party administrators and intermediaries.

  • Monitor underwriting processes in order to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Provide recommendations for solving problems or improving procedures or products.

  • Comply with the main principles relevant to legal and regulatory controls that govern standard work practices.

  • Anticipate, recognise and respond to needs of customers, identify vulnerable customers and support the implementation of customer initiatives.

Your skills and experience:

  • Appropriate balance of people and technical skills

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills

  • Customer relationship skills

  • Proactive and able to manage a diverse workload

  • Able to take a “business view"

  • Ability to work under pressure, maintaining a strong strategic focus whilst responding to the tactical demands

  • Team player

  • Highly numerate

  • Experience in a similar underwriting role preferred but not essential

  • Progression in CII examinations or willing to progress, which will be funded by us
